Project Methods Because watersheds at this scale cannot be replicated in a classic statistical sense, long-term observations across years are used to characterize ecological and hydrologic conditions of aquatic, riparian, and upland systems before and after different intensities of management are imposed across a variety of watersheds.

The use of forest herbicides are often perceived by the public to cause serious harm to the environment. As a result, many public land managers consider herbicides as socially unacceptable and are hesitant to use these tools to protect forest health and to insure forest sustainability.
This project examines the risks & benefits of forest herbicide practices, as compared to other forest. The proposed research will benefit the Forest Service research program by developing and testing concepts and methods for using advanced remote sensing technologies for forest structure and composition measurement and monitoring.
The USDA Forest Service (FS) is charged with inventory and monintoring of all forest lands on a regular periodic cycle. The entire forest floor layer is sampled from a known area after measuring the thickness of the litter and duff layers at the north, south, east, and west edges of a 12 inch diameter sampling frame.
